Heat of Rivalry is a contemporary sports romance novel by author Rachel Reid. It was first published in 2019 and it is the second installment of the Game Changers series; however, it is a standalone novel.

Plot Overview

This novel is centered around Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, the top-rated hockey players. Right from the start of their career in the hockey league, they find themselves as competitors who face each other on the ice and compete for the favor of the crowd.

Despite their rivalry, both come to know each other very intimately, developing a romantic relationship which continues throughout several years. The bond between them strengthens as a result of their private communication and emotions which they have not anticipated to feel before.

This book forms part of a collection of books known as the Game Changers series written by Rachel Reid. In the second novel, titled The Long Game, the storyline of Shane and Ilya continues after the Heated Rivalry novel.

Season one aired for the first time on November 28, 2025, containing six episodes:

“Rookies” – This episode shows the connection between the draft year players and their clandestine meetings.

“Hunter” – Revealing the tension between their careers and feelings when competing for success.

“Rose” – This episode exposes new vulnerabilities with public scrutiny closing in around them.

“I’ll Believe In Anything” – A critical episode where they must make some serious decisions.

“The Cottage” – Their final episode in which they get to escape the pressures of public life but must decide what is next for them.

Season 2 Updates & Future

Release Window: Season 2 is confirmed in development and will premiere in April 2027.

The story: Production will start in the summer of 2026, adapting Rachel Reid’s sequel novel, The Long Game.

The Tone: Showrunner Jacob Tierney teased that while it will have a “similar level of spice,” the story will explore much more mature, serious emotional territory as they build a public life together.

The Musical: Riding the success of the show, Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody opened off-Broadway in New York in late May 2026.
